Fifth Third Bank Recognized with Renewable Energy Hero Award

100% Solar Project Acknowledged at Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit

CINCINNATI — Fifth Third Bancorp was recognized today with the Renewable Energy Hero Award at Green Umbrella’s annual Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit. Fifth Third’s Director of Sustainability Scott Hassell accepted the award from Green Umbrella Board President Andy Holzhauser.

The Renewable Energy Hero Award recognizes outstanding commitment among businesses to increase their renewable energy portfolio. Fifth Third Bancorp is slated to achieve 100% renewable energy later this year when the solar project made possible by its innovative virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) is completed. The fully-operational Aulander Holloman Solar Facility in North Carolina will enable Fifth Third to achieve one of its five bold Sustainability goals—to purchase 100% renewable power—three years ahead of schedule. The Bank has already achieved its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2022.

“It’s an honor for Green Umbrella to recognize the leadership of Fifth Third Bancorp in advancing environmental sustainability,” said Andy Holzhauser, Green Umbrella Board President. “The PPA agreement they announced last year was truly groundbreaking. When the solar facility is complete, it will lead to Fifth Third achieving 100 percent renewable power via solar energy, which will likely be a first in the industry.”

Scott Hassell added, “The Bank’s commitment to sustainability was born here in our headquarters city of Cincinnati and Green Umbrella has been a partner with us since the beginning. We’re so grateful to Green Umbrella and the sustainability leadership they provide in the Queen City and beyond. We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts to achieve 100% renewable power.”
